To determine whether the soil is dry, push your finger in about two inches and feel if its damp - if dry, then water.

One other I've read about previously is to observe how quickly the water is absorbed. For example, when I had three maturning cucumbers in a small container, water absorbed quickly as there are lots of roots to feed.
